Microsoft Stream issues with .mkv files / Best practice recording with OBS

I have stumbled upon some issues in Microsoft Stream due to my use case of recording with OBS-Studio.

Scenario

I like to record meetings or trainings with OBS Studio: sometimes you can not use the built-in Teams recording feature either because you are not the Teams meeting organizer or what you want to record is not part of a Teams meeting at all.

Moreover recording with OBS offers more capability than the default Teams meeting recording. For example, you can select which window to be recorded, you can add your video cam to the recording, and so on.

When recording with OBS I choose by default the .mkv video file format because I have read in case of a crash you won't lose the recording contrary to the mp4 format.

See warning below if you select mp4 as Output Setting:
"Warning: Recordings saved to MP4 will be unrecoverable if the file cannot be finalized..."

Stream Problem with MKV Files

Now when uploading the MKV file to Microsoft Stream new version (Stream on SharePoint) it looks first fine.
But when I tried to add chapters, Stream understood at some point the file to be Audio only and I lost the video part (the video was frozen to a thumbnail.)
You can explicitly see this - as shown in the screenshot below - in the Settings button in the side Toolbar on the right: it is named "Audio Settings" instead of "Video Settings":

I have shared this issue with Microsoft Marc Mroz on 2022-09-26 so hopefully, it will get fixed soon.

Workaround / Lesson Learned

To workaround this issue, I recommend to and do personally convert the .mkv file to .mp4 prior to uploading it to SharePoint.

This is very easy and fast in OBS.
Go to File->Remux Recordings

Then select your recorded .mkv file:

Click on Remux to convert it to mp4
