I share in this post a nice learning / feature in Excel PowerQuery
Use Case Description
When importing data via PowerQuery into an Excel Table, I would like to add some Custom Columns to the Table based on for example some formulas.
Examples of Formula could be an INDEX/MATCH combo to expand some fields from another Table or add an HYPERLINK.
I worried in this case that when I refresh the Data I would lose the custom column(s).
Luckily, Excel is smart enough to keep the Custom Columns. It kinds of intelligently merge the two parts.
I assume this is related to the fact that the custom columns are using structured reference.
Fazit
Excel will keep custom columns added to a Table loaded with Data from PowerQuery after a Refresh/ Reload of the Data.
